Acheron Wokuro (Ite: ɅꞰ≡ᛚ◇И W◇ꞰVᛚ◇) is one of the divers in Voidound. He is a Magenta-ranked diver and specializes in solitary missions.

Appearance

Acheron is a hikuite of tall stature and muscular top-heavy build. Being a hikuite, he has a short, nub-like tail. His skin color is white with numerous gray scars all over the body. He has a black, V-shaped face marking on the top half of his face. He has deep-set phoenix eyes with small pupils, but his eyes are rarely visible. Acheron has stubble on his face. He has waist-length, unruly, spiky black hair gathered in a low ponytail. When not held back by the headband, the bangs fall over his face slightly.

Acheron's primary diving outfit consists of a sleeveless, teal button-up jumpsuit with chest and thigh pockets, as well as a dark belt on the waist. He wears black, almost knee-high boots with belts, spiked soles and light gray laces, as well as gray knee pads. He also wears a pair of massive dark gray gloves with lighter finger tips and gray arm bracers on top. In addition, Acheron has a black, asymmetrical shoulder harness going over his right shoulder and possessing small, additional bags. More often than not, Acheron is also seen with a white headband with feathers of the same color attached to the sides, which he wears in memory of Branko. His rank band is tied on his left forearm.

When going to deeper layers, Acheron's diving gear also has additional layers of clothing (i.e. long underwear under the jumpsuit and a sweater/turtleneck on top), a dark knee-length cape that resembles a military cape, and a dark gray bandana covering his lower half of the face.

In post-canon, Acheron's appearance stays almost the same, aside from now wearing more casual clothing and not wearing the headband anymore. He has even more scars, one of them going right over his left cheek. He also has a small strand of white hair in the front. He still wears his rank armband whenever he's working as a mentor or participating in council meetings. Due to the injury that caused the retirement in post-canon, Acheron sometimes has difficulties standing or sitting for long periods of time, mostly due to pain or discomfort in the hip and lower back, hence why he can be seen with a cane.

Biography

Personality

Acheron's personality can be described as highly pragmatic, collected and closed-off. He's naturally a very introverted individual, rarely reaching out or speaking up first unless necessary, preferring to observe or stay by himself instead. He is not antisocial, however, and is fully tolerating of other's presence as long as they don't actively intervene with his duties or personal matters. He doesn't speak in verbose sentences, preferring more short, straight to the point speech. Despite his introverted nature, he is capable of team work, be it in the role of a leader or follower, though his approach remains highly focused on work and efficiency.

Although very capable and calm, Acheron has noticeable difficulties in expressing and experiencing feelings. More emotionally intense, volatile or caring interactions often come off as awkward to him. As shown with Branko, Acheron genuinely enjoys the presence of certain individuals, but has a hard time openly expressing and reciprocating actions and feelings. He isn't dismissive or oblivious to other's emotions, capable of recognizing them, but struggling with providing verbal or emotional support unless directly asked and told what to do. Facial expressions are also an issue, given how his face largely remains neutral, if not for the occasional frowns or smirks that, frankly, look more like a snarl than a genuine smile.

After the loss of Branko in a diving incident, Acheron has significantly doubled down on his closed-off and pragmatic nature, becoming hyper-independent and focusing only on diving without social life. This is primarily done as a means of avoiding processing the trauma and the fear of relationships and attachment that came from it. Because of the trauma, Acheron also seems to struggle with survivor's guilt over the fact that he had to run and couldn't save Branko. Although the trait was prominent even before the incident, he has a major flaw of being stubborn and self-destructive when it comes to work, which leads to constant overworking and downplaying own injuries or needs as long as he can stay functional physically.

When younger, Acheron was just as equally introverted and stubborn, though he has been noticeably arrogant and over-confident when it came to diving training. The arrogance and the belief of enduring things was partially mellowed out by Machihan, though not by a lot. More significant improval of the arrogance and need to prove own worth happened only after getting closer with Branko, given how the two have rather opposite personalities.

In post-canon, Acheron has somewhat moved on from the trauma and is still introverted, but more open to social interactions, although they're still primarily work-focused, including but not limited to: participating in Warden Council meetings, mentoring initiates, or communicating with other mentors. He shows rather decent skills as a mentor, but does have an unintentional tendency to go harder on promising trainees, as he recognizes own past experience in some of them and wants to prevent the mistakes he did. Acheron is also much more used to the presence of Mitchell and his well-being is in some of Acheron's interest, but the two never acknowledge or define their relationship as familial.

Relationships

Branko Trin'ya: Acheron's best friend. Branko was the person that Acheron actively trusted, liked, and lived with, allowing himself to be dragged into social interactions that he usually wouldn't be interested in. They were regular coworkers on expeditions, consistently delivering good results and were often expected to work together. The incident with Branko and his unknown fate forced Acheron to completely withdraw into himself and become what he is now. If not for the incident, the two could end up having a proper life on the surface.

Duo names

Lost Light (Acheron, Branko): The duo name acts as a reference both to the incident in which Branko went missing, and the fact that Branko was one of the good things in Acheron's life. The duo can be depicted as friends or in a queerplatonic relationship. This is the only allowed pairing with Acheron.

Stray Cat (Acheron, Mitchell): The duo name mostly references how Mitchell was picked up by Acheron like a stray cat. The duo can be depicted only in a familial or mentor-mentee relationship.

Trivia

  • Acheron was originally made as a random character design suggestion for the Voidbound co-authors early on in the project, back when the characters were just Nullscape-inspired OCs.
    • His birthday is July 23rd, being based off the date when his first design concept was thought of.
    • His birthday date could've been July 24th if Merenq didn't mention the idea of a character design a couple of minutes before midnight. His birthday date could've also been November 18th if Merenq went by the date when Acheron had his first complete version of the design.
    • His zodiac sign is Leo.
    • Acheron shares his birthday with Voidbound's anniversary date.
    • Despite sharing his birthday with the project's anniversary, Acheron isn't the first character made. That title belongs to Ephor, which is currently irrelevant to the project.
  • Acheron's name means "river of sorrow".
    • This wasn't an intentional choice, as Merenq chose his name purely based off the sound and the name starting with A.
    • Acheron is one of the few characters with a name that comes from a real life name, surname or word, rather than being made up. He shares this trait with Mitchell, Trevor, Finch, Charlotte, Ceander, and Xanthe.
  • Originally Acheron was originally planned to die at some point, but it was decided that he'll retire instead.
    • The retirement was partially decided due to Merenq's and aquaticVirtue's wish for Acheron and Mitchell to have a parent-child dynamic.
  • Acheron's diving gear before the second redesign was inspired by Ozen's outfit from Made in Abyss.
  • Acheron is Merenq's favorite character in Voidbound.
  • If the characters had real nationalities, Acheron would be of latino or mixed latino-greek origin.
    • Despite his original skin tone being white, his human version would have olive skin with black hair.
  • Acheron is aroace and unlabeled.
    • Despite this, Merenq leans towards the implications of Acheron being gay.
  • Acheron would listen to Three Days Grace, Type O Negative, Skillet and KoRn.
    • Ironically, Peter Steele, the late frontman of Type O Negative, is visually similar to Acheron, which is a pure coincidence.
  • Acheron would like strategy games or shooters like Call of Duty or Ready or Not, but notably, he would be the quiet kind of player.
  • Acheron's associated animal is a snow leopard.
  • Acheron enneagram is sp/so 5w6. His tritype is 583 (sp5sp8sp3).
  • Acheron's Classpect is Mage of Doom.
